My Favorite Things About Jamaica: An Insider's Guide to Food, Music, and Culture

Jamaica is a true paradise for those who appreciate vibrant flavors, stunning beaches, and soulful music. Every corner of this island offers something unique, from delectable dishes and idyllic beaches to spirited reggae music and welcoming accommodations. Here are Lara Morin's absolute favorite things about Jamaica that make it such an unforgettable destination. If you’re planning a visit, use this guide to experience Jamaica’s beauty, heart, and culture to the fullest.

Must-Try Jamaican Food

Jamaica’s cuisine is a feast of flavors that reflects its diverse cultural heritage. Here are three of my all-time favorite Jamaican treats that capture the essence of the island’s culinary spirit.

1. Devon House Coconut Ice Cream

There’s no better way to beat the Jamaican heat than with a scoop (or two) of Devon House Coconut Ice Cream. Made from fresh Jamaican coconut, this creamy delight is the perfect balance of rich, natural sweetness and tropical flavor. Devon House, a historic landmark in Kingston, is home to this famous ice cream shop, where locals and visitors alike line up for their favorite flavors. The Coconut flavor is a must-try, offering a taste that’s uniquely Jamaican and always refreshingly delicious.

2. Ackee and Saltfish

No Jamaican breakfast is complete without a plate of Ackee and Saltfish. This national dish combines ackee, a tropical fruit with a buttery, mild flavor, and saltfish (usually cod) that has been soaked, cooked, and seasoned with tomatoes, onions, peppers, and spices. The unique, savory flavors are truly one of a kind, and whether you try it with boiled dumplings, breadfruit, or festival (a sweet fried dough), it’s a dish that captures the soul of Jamaican cooking.

3. A Very Cold Red Stripe Beer

On a hot Jamaican afternoon, nothing hits the spot quite like an ice-cold Red Stripe beer. This locally brewed lager has a light, crisp taste with a slightly sweet finish, making it the perfect companion to any beach day, barbecue, or just about any meal. Red Stripe is as much a part of Jamaican culture as reggae music, and sipping one in Jamaica is an experience in itself. Drinking a nice cold one by the water wheel at Main Street Rose Hall in Montego Bay is a nice one!

Favorite Jamaican Restaurants

Jamaica’s restaurant scene is brimming with exciting spots that range from casual beachside eateries to sophisticated dining experiences. Here are some of my favorites across the island, each offering something special.

NEGRIL:

In Negril, Miss Lily’s delivers a lively Caribbean experience with a menu full of modern Jamaican classics. From jerk chicken and curried goat to plantain pancakes, Miss Lily’s captures the island’s vibe in a fun, eclectic setting. My favorite is their coconut pancakes for breakfast. For a more rustic feel, Murphy’s offers authentic, home-cooked Jamaican food in a relaxed, local atmosphere. Their seafood and jerk pork are crowd favorites, cooked fresh and seasoned to perfection. Everything on their menu is amazing! Murphy and his wife are the sweetest hosts too!

MONTEGO BAY:

Houseboat is a unique dining experience in Montego Bay, as the restaurant floats on the water. Known for its fresh seafood and romantic setting, it’s a must for food lovers looking for something different. I love everything I have tried so far on the menu! Uncorked West offers an extensive selection of wines and tapas, perfect for those who enjoy a more refined meal. Cant beat good food with incredible wine! If you’re in the mood for something spicy and flavorful, Mystic Thai delivers authentic Thai cuisine with a Jamaican twist that’s both satisfying and memorable. Their Tom Kha Gai soup is to die for!

OCHO RIOS:

When dining in Ocho Rios, two must-visit restaurants are Ciao Bella and Miss T’s Kitchen, each offering a unique taste of Jamaica. Ciao Bella brings Italian cuisine to the island, offering authentic dishes with a touch of local flavor. Known for its homemade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and fresh seafood, Ciao Bella is ideal for those seeking a refined dining experience with an Italian twist. Love their marinated marlin! In contrast, Miss T’s Kitchen serves up classic Jamaican comfort food in a cozy, colorful setting that reflects true island spirit. From jerk chicken to curry goat, Miss T’s menu celebrates Jamaica’s vibrant flavors and traditions, all crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Both restaurants offer a memorable culinary experience in Ocho Rios, blending international influences and Jamaican soul. Literally everything on their menu tastes amazing and also love the vibe there!

KINGSTON:

Uncorked Barbican, Mystic Thai Kingston, Tamarind Continental, and Eits in Kingston

Kingston’s food scene is thriving, and these spots are some of the best the city has to offer. Uncorked Barbican is ideal for wine enthusiasts, serving a wide range of wines alongside flavorful tapas and entrees. The lighting alone is charming and the food is consistently good. Their wine selection is also incredible. Mystic Thai Kingston delivers the same fantastic flavors as its Montego Bay counterpart, with Thai dishes that are perfect for spice lovers. My favorites are the chilli mushrooms and lobster in coconut sauce. Tamarind Continental is an upscale restaurant that offers a diverse menu of international dishes in an elegant setting. Their butter chicken pizza rocks! For a farm-to-table experience, Eits Café provides fresh, locally sourced meals with a cozy, homey feel. The views are also spectacular. The host Robin Fox is one of the sweetest persons ever!

Reggae Rhythms: My Favorite Jamaican Artists

Jamaican music is the heart and soul of the island, and these artists are among my favorites for their distinct styles and powerful messages.

Beres Hammond

Known for his soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics, Beres Hammond is a reggae legend whose music speaks to themes of love, life, and resilience. His songs, like “Rockaway” and “I Feel Good,” bring a sense of joy and nostalgia that can transport you right into the heart of Jamaica. His music is a must-listen for anyone who wants to experience the soulful side of reggae.

Romain Virgo

With a smooth voice and an impressive vocal range, Romain Virgo is one of the newer faces of Jamaican reggae, known for his modern take on the genre. Songs like “Love Doctor” and “Soul Provider” showcase his ability to blend reggae with a bit of R&B, making his music accessible and deeply moving.

Mortimer

Another rising star in the reggae scene, Mortimer has quickly gained attention for his reflective lyrics and smooth, soothing voice. Songs like “Lightning” and “Careful” showcase his soulful style and introspective lyrics. Mortimer’s music is deeply rooted in his Jamaican heritage, bringing fresh energy to the reggae genre.

Best Places to Stay: Hotels and Resorts

Jamaica offers a range of accommodations, from luxurious resorts to charming boutique hotels. Here are some of my favorite places to stay, where comfort and authenticity meet.

In Negril, Skylark and Rockhouse are two standout options that embody the laid-back spirit of the island. Skylark is a trendy, beachfront hotel that combines bohemian design with modern amenities. Meanwhile, Rockhouse, perched on Negril’s famous cliffs, offers unique, eco-friendly bungalows with stunning ocean views. Both hotels provide an intimate, relaxing experience that captures the beauty of Jamaica.

For a luxurious escape, Eclipse at Half Moon in Montego Bay is an exceptional choice. This stunning resort offers world-class amenities, including a private beach, golf course, spa, and a range of dining options. It’s the perfect blend of Jamaican charm and luxury, making it ideal for a memorable vacation.

Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios is a luxurious, boutique resort known for its timeless elegance and serene beachfront setting. Established in 1950, this iconic hotel has welcomed travelers from around the world, including celebrities and dignitaries, with its classic Caribbean charm and top-notch service. Each suite and cottage offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, with tasteful decor that blends seamlessly into the island’s natural beauty. Jamaica Inn’s private beach is one of the best in Ocho Rios, offering a secluded and tranquil retreat for guests to enjoy white sands and crystal-clear waters. Jamaica Inn provides an unforgettable experience of pure island luxury.

Best Beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica is famous for its stunning beaches, and these two are my top picks for their beauty and ambiance.

Located in Montego Bay, Doctor’s Cave Beach is known for its crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand. This beach is a favorite for locals and tourists alike, offering facilities like beach chairs, changing rooms, and cafes. The calm, turquoise water is ideal for swimming, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing beach day.

If you’re looking for a more secluded beach, Frenchman’s Cove in Port Antonio is breathtakingly beautiful. This small, quiet cove is surrounded by lush greenery, with a freshwater river that flows into the sea. It’s one of Jamaica’s hidden gems, offering a peaceful, scenic escape that’s ideal for relaxation and nature lovers.

Jamaica Inn's beach is also amazing!!

Embracing the Spirit of Jamaica

Jamaica is a destination that captures the heart with its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and incredible food. From the rich, spicy flavors of jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish to the tranquil beaches and soulful reggae music, Jamaica offers a feast for the senses. Staying at boutique hotels, savoring local delicacies, and enjoying the rhythms of Beres Hammond and Mortimer are just a few of the many experiences that make this island so unforgettable.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, there’s always something new to discover and love about Jamaica. This is a land of warmth, flavor, and soul—come ready to explore, taste, and feel the spirit of the island.
